The current economic situation has many companies trimming travel budgets, investigating new teleconferencing options and renegotiating agreements with providers of travel services. However, your travel schedule may be just as hectic as before – in fact, face time with clients and partners is probably more important now than ever. So, how can you keep on traveling while doing your part to reduce costs? You may be surprised by the savings you can achieve by practicing little economies on the road. Here are some ideas:
Avoid baggage fees. The best way to avoid paying airlines’ fees for checked luggage is not to have any luggage to check. This may mean making greater use of laundry and dry cleaning services on the road, but those costs are likely to be less than the checked baggage fees. If you must to travel with more than can comfortably fit into a carry-on bag, or if you need to carry lots of documents, electronics or project samples, consider shipping them ahead to your destination.
Park in the long-term lot. The short-term parking lot at your home airport may be conveniently located – especially if you are running late and have to rush to the gate – but the cost is probably significantly higher per day than long-term parking.
Select a smaller rental car. If the car is just for your transportation – not to impress clients – the lowest rate should do. The rental company may also provide you with a free upgrade to a larger car, depending on what models are available.
Take advantage of complimentary breakfasts. Lots of hotels that cater to business travelers offer free breakfast. Sometimes it’s a simple continental breakfast, and sometimes it’s a full breakfast with a chef standing by to make omelettes or waffles to order. Plan your day so that you will have time to sit down and enjoy breakfast – you’ll be less likely to buy a midmorning snack or indulge in a big, overpriced lunch.
Stay where you can cook – or just heat up – some meals for yourself. If you have the option, select a hotel that has kitchenettes, or at least microwaves and refrigerators in the rooms. A quick stop at the local grocery store for some ready-made items from the deli will provide an economical, and likely delicious, lunch or dinner.
Finally, bypass the valet. Park your car yourself whenever possible, and you’ll save on valet fees and tips.
