Get Through Airport Security Faster

The busy summer travel season can mean longer lines at airport security stations, so you’ll want to do everything you can to make the process as smooth and fast as possible. Even the most seasoned business travelers can take a look at their security station technique to see if there’s room for improvement. Here are three tips:

First, always dress for success. One of the best things you can do to prepare for the security station is wear slip-on shoes. With no need to untie and re-tie your shoes, you’ll save lots of time. Also, slip your watch, any other non-essential jewelry and your belt into the pocket of your carry-on bag before you approach the security station. You could put them in a screening bin, but it will take extra time for you to collect them after they go through X-ray screening.

Second, keep your laptop computer in a checkpoint friendly bag. These bags are designed to provide a clear, unobstructed view of the computer when it goes through X-ray screening. For a bag to be considered checkpoint friendly, it should meet the following standards:

  • A designated laptop-only section that unfolds completely to lie flat on the X-ray belt.
  • No metal snaps, zippers or buckles inside, beneath or on top of the laptop-only section.
  • No pockets on the inside or outside of the laptop-only section.
  • Nothing packed in the laptop-only section other than the computer itself.

A checkpoint friendly bag will save you the time it takes to remove your computer, then wrestle it back into the bag while trying to put on your shoes and gather your other belongings. Your laptop will also be better protected when it stays in the bag.

Third, watch for, and take advantage of, new methods of screening. An increasing number of airports are assigning security lines to specific groups of travelers – such as expert, casual, and family travelers. Being on a business trip automatically makes you an expert traveler, so get in that line – it should be the one that moves the fastest.
