Invest in a GPS

Some road warriors may pride themselves on their ability to navigate a new city using only their business savvy, innate sense of direction and perhaps a little help from a local map. However, not knowing exactly where you are going can lead to lost time and wasted gas as you try to follow an outdated map, rely on unclear directions from a passer-by or confuse east and west in an unfamiliar location.

These troubles can be eliminated by carrying a global positioning system (GPS) with you. These satellite-based systems are very handy gadgets. They pinpoint your position on the globe and provide you with step-by-step directions to your destination, whether it’s around the corner or across town. GPS systems can even direct you around traffic jams and construction zones. With this kind of precise and accurate assistance, you have a much better chance of finding what you’re looking for – whether it’s a restaurant, factory, airport, hotel or office building – on the first try.

A variety of GPS devices are available, and there are certain characteristics you might want to look for. For example, choose a compact GPS that you can carry with you easily. If you visit cities that are walkable, you may want a GPS that has a pedestrian mode, so you can use it when driving or walking.

If you’re an international traveler, look for a GPS that’s pre-loaded with international maps. You may also want features like currency converters and language translators.

And, if you don’t want to carry around a separate piece of hardware, you may be able to add a GPS software package to your palmtop or pocket PC.

Finally, rest assured that there’s no shame in relying on a GPS to find your way around on your business trips – lots of your customers and suppliers probably use them, too. And, you’ll enjoy a great feeling of accomplishment when your GPS helps you arrive at your appointments on time, unflustered, and ready to address the business at hand.
